Hungarian Apple Pite

This is a traditional Hungarian recipe, a version of the American Apple Pie.
It is a fairly light pastry filled with goodness of grated apples and cinnamon... Easy to make and it is a wonderful snack or for the lunch box.

Here is the Recipe for the Apple Pite

Ingredients:
2 cups white flour
3/4 cup margarine
4 tbsp. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. lemon juice
3-4 tbsp. sour cream
1 egg, for brushing

6-7 apples
4 tbsp. sugar
1/3 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
1 tbsp. cinnamon

Prepare dough by mixing flour with the margarine with a pastry cutter until resembles fine bread crumbs. Add sugar, eggs, baking powder, lemon juice and enough sour cream to form a soft dough that cleans off the sides of the bowl.
Add a bit more flour if needed and form into a ball. Let stand at room temperature for 1/2 hour.

Peel apples, and grate them on the large grater. Sprinkle with the sugar. Set aside.

Place dough on a floured surface and cut in two. Roll out each to fit into a 9x13 pan. Place one layer  on the bottom of the pan.

Strain apples. Mix in the walnuts and cinnamon and spread it out on top of the dough in the pan. Cover with the second layer. Beat the egg lightly into a bowl and brush it on.  Prick with fork in a few places to let steam escape and bake at 350 F  preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden.

Happy Baking!

  2. can I substitute sugar with honey or brown sugar?

  3. My first choice would be organic coconut sugar as it wont change the flavour as honey or brown sugar would. That's not to say you can not try.

    1. No yeast, only baking powder. We want the crust to be flaky.
